Two of the boldest minds in music and theatre come together for their third collaboration – a new semi-staged production of Janáček’s masterful opera.
The partnership between Sir Simon Rattle and director Peter Sellars is fast becoming a highlight of the cultural calendar. After two acclaimed productions in previous seasons, which transformed the Barbican Hall in ways never seen before – Debussy’s Pelléas et Mélisande and Schumann’s Das Paradies und Die Peri – the duo bring the 2018/19 season to rousing finale with Janáček’s comic opera.
Melodious and charming, this is a work rooted in Czech history and folk music; and a sentimental journey through the cycles of life. And for Sir Simon Rattle, it’s a deeply personal and emotional work – ‘it’s the piece that made me want to become an opera conductor… and still one of the pieces that reduces me to tears more easily than any other.’
