Musically resplendent Don Carlo in Washington

Leah Crocetto (Elisabetta) and Russell Thomas (Don Carlo) © Scott Suchman
The team of soloists, the chorus and the orchestra, under the baton of Philippe Auguin, powerfully conveyed the spectacular qualities of Verdi's Don Carlo.

Surrealist Rigoletto impresses at the Lyric

Quinn Kelsey (Rigoletto) and Matthew Polenzani (Duke of Mantua) © Todd Rosenberg
The Lyric Opera’s new production of Rigoletto evokes visually the contours and high-contrast relief of a surrealist painting.

Rewriting Rimsky: a dismal Sadko in Ghent

Zurab Zurabishvili (Sadko) © Annemie Augustijns
Rimsky-Korsakov’s opera is rarely performed outside Russia. Sadly, I doubt that Daniel Kramer’s staging for Opera Vlaanderen will win it many new friends.

Quinn Kelsey excels as Rigoletto in San Francisco

Quinn Kelsey (Rigoletto) and Nino Machaidze (Gilda) © Cory Weaver | San Francisco Opera
If you love Verdi's inventive music, enjoy fabulous male voices in particular, and appreciate great opera conducting with exquisitely sensitive orchestral playing – then this Rigoletto is a must.

Grand opéra, grand singing: Les Huguenots

Olesya Golovneva (Valentine) and Juan Diego Flórez (Raoul) © Bettina Stöss
Meyerbeer's little performed work is given an enthusiastic rendering, with star singing from a big cast led by Flórez, Ciofi and Jerkunica. David Alden's quality Personenregie makes up for some unconvincing setting choices.
