Hercules is a rarity even today – an opera designed for the concert hall, and one of Handel’s most inspired, and intensely human, music-dramas. Harry Bicket, Alice Coote and Lucy Crowe have all performed Hercules in the theatre; with Matthew Rose as Hercules and James Gilchrist as his son Hyllus, they’re ideally placed to bring out the full dramatic power of Handel at his mature operatic peak.
