Classical Opera presents its first performance of Mozart’s magnificent late opera, allegedly written within eighteen days during the composer’s final months. For a long time dismissed as the black sheep among Mozart’s mature operas, La clemenza di Tito is only now becoming recognised as a masterpiece, and with its combination of nobility and passion, virtuosity and economy of gesture, it can be seen to represent the apotheosis of the 18th century ‘opera seria’. Mozart himself called the work an ‘opera vera’ – a ‘true’ opera – and his skill in, and commitment to, creating dynamic and psychologically insightful musical drama radiates throughout the score.
