After Elena, Il Giasone, Eliogabalo and Erismena, Leonardo García-Alarcón continues his rediscovery of the operas of Francesco Cavalli, pupil of Monteverdi and undisputed master of 17th-century opera, with this work, in which all the elements that today constitute the foundations of the art of musical theatre are perfectly interwoven in a dense and multifaceted drama.

Tragedy is juxtaposed with comedy, and deep emotions mingle with the grotesque. The work is distinguished by its balance between the heroic grandeur and humanity of the characters, rendering their dilemmas and emotions surprisingly modern. With its shifting alliances, betrayals and thwarted loves, Pompeo Magno is a captivating opera in which the fate of a changing world is played out against a backdrop of political intrigue between Caesar, Pompey and Crassus, leading to the end of the Roman Republic and civil war.

Leonardo García-Alarcón invites you to discover this rare work, performed by Cappella Mediterranea and a unique cast, which will premiere in August 2025 at the Bayreuth Baroque Festival.
