On demand: Beethoven's Symphony no. 2 in D major

GSOplayRecorded at Gothenburg Concert Hall: Stora Salen, Gothenburg, Sweden

A bright and vibrant music, where the larghetto belongs to his most lucky gestures: compared to Beethoven's first symphony (which you can watch here) written two years earlier, much has happened. A reviewer at the first performance of the Symphony no.2 in D major at the Theater an der Wien wrote, on April 5, 1803: ‘The first symphony is more valuable than the second, because it is performed with untrue ease, while the second is characterized by the pursuit of the new and unhappy.’  In fact, the critic had just witnessed the transformation of classicism into passionate romanticism.

Watch this masterpiece performed by the Gothenburg Symphony led by Santtu-Matias Rouvali.

Recorded in October 2018.
