Brahms’ First Symphony begins with the beating of a heart in torment and ends with a hymn of triumph. Debussy’s Prélude à I’après-midi d’un faune is very different – as a soft, sultry flute opens the gateway to a dream-world of sensuous sound. Two huge imaginations; two unforgettable musical journeys, brought thrillingly to life by our inspirational guest conductor Ariane Matiakh.
In between, cellist Zlatomir Fung, a former RPO Artist-in-Residence, performs Elgar's Cello Concerto, a towering work beloved by audiences and rich in anguish and passion.
