The renowned Bavarian State Ballet opens the season at The Liceu Opera House with Giselle, in Peter Wright’s acclaimed 1974 production. A timeless masterpiece of Romantic ballet, it contrasts pastoral village life with a haunting nocturnal world of spirits.
Wright’s version honours the classical tradition of Petipa, Coralli and Perrot, yet adapts the choreography to modern technique, placing acting and virtuosity at the forefront. Giselle tells the story of a young girl who, betrayed in love, descends into madness and becomes a “Wili”—one of the ghostly brides who rise from their graves to dance men to death.
Inspired by a tale recorded by Heinrich Heine, Giselle explores love, betrayal, and redemption through powerful storytelling and expressive movement. With its emotional depth and technical brilliance, this production remains a landmark of the ballet repertoire.
