The string trio occupies a unique place in the history of chamber music. Less grandiose than the string quartet, it lays bare the art of dialogue. After Mozart, then Beethoven’s Trios Op. 9, the genre established a compositional style in which each of the instruments finds itself exposed. In the years following the Revolution, Paris discovered a new ambition for instrumental music in the Viennese models, inspiring its own composers to strike a balance between French clarity and Germanic density. Here, Beethoven, Hyacinthe Jadin and Boëly chart a course from Bonn to Paris, with the interplay of the three instruments giving rise to a new tension, between elegance, energy and depth.
