Yo-Yo Ma premieres Esa-Pekka Salonen’s new cello concerto as the New York Philharmonic’s Barbican residency goes out in a blaze of sonic glory.

One of our best-loved cellists gives the European premiere of a new concerto by the New York Philharmonic’s composer-in-residence. Add John Adams’ glittering ‘minimalist symphony’Harmonielehre and this becomes a full-colour celebration of everything that’s most vivid in modern American music.

Yo-Yo Ma and Esa-Pekka Salonen are both born communicators with a natural gift, and either of them would make this concert a major occasion. But this spirited mixture of the uncompromising and the accessible is simply what Alan Gilbert does with the New York Philharmonic – and why, according to Alex Ross, he ‘has invigorated the institution as no conductor since Boulez has done’
