Johannes Brahms was just 26 when he premiered his Piano Concerto in D minor at the Royal Court Theatre in Hanover. In addition to his youthful energy, he also poured the dramas of his life into this, in his own words, «grand and difficult» concerto, which has fascinated and inspired the most important pianists for almost 150 years. It goes without saying that it is also one of Rudolf Buchbinder's favourite pieces, and he savours the great emotions in it as much as the lyrical, rapturous moments. Lahav Shani, himself an outstanding pianist, took over as chief conductor of the traditional Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra in September 2018, the youngest in the orchestra's 100-year history. Ludwig van Beethoven's «Eroica» brings this first of two impressive concert evenings by our guests from the Netherlands to a truly «heroic» conclusion.

Please note: The Israel Philharmonic Orchestra has unfortunately had to cancel its participation in this concert for organisational reasons. We are delighted that the Rotterdam Philharmonic Orchestra has taken over the guest performance in Grafenegg with a revised programme.
