"Echoes Across the Atlantic" begins in Britain, where Elgar and Vaughan Williams shaped 20th-century English art song. Benjamin Britten adds to this legacy with a uniquely distinctive voice that is in great contrast to his predecessors while clearly acknowledging his roots.
The musical voyage then continues to the US, where Barber, Copland and contemporary composers blend European influences with innovative clarity. A retrospective on European Romanticism concludes the concert, featuring works by Respighi, who concertized in this nation's capital in the early 20th century.
In addition to keeping traditional repertoire in the zeitgeist, Duo Atlantis will perform a new commission from Emmy award winning composer Bear McCreary called 'Power the World'. The work is a four part song cycle exploring the lives of children in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and paralleling the launch of the Kinshasa Mercantile Exchange (KME), an initiative promoting transparency and local prosperity by empowering Congolese youth with opportunity, stability and lasting economic inclusion.
