Herbert Blomstedt conducts Schubert and Berwald... and picks up a medal on his return to the Leipzig Gewandhaus.

After a twelve year absence from his schedule, the Norwegian pianist returns to the classic warhorse in a bracing concert given by Concerto Copenhagen. 

Blomstedt, in splendid form at 91, also paid tribute to his largely forgotten compatriot Franz Berwald, who died 150 years ago.

Berwald’s quirky Third Symphony opened the concert before a beautifully judged performance of Dvořák’s Seventh Symphony.

After a stunning Sibelius cycle with Simon Rattle at the Barbican earlier in the week, this splinter group from the Berlin Philharmonic crossed the Thames to give a concert of delightful Scandinavian gems alongside a Schubert masterwork.
