Amanda Majeski reprises her peerless Kátya, but Katarina Dalayman's flint-like characterisation as Kabanicha strikes the most sparks.

Richard Jones' setting is superb in its bare minimalism, but he pays great attention to all the psychological nuances in Janáček's opera. 

Originally conceived by Robert Carsen for the Vlaamse Opera, this production of Katia Kabanova is now at Teatro Regio, second chapter of a Janáček/Carsen project.
