Stephen Layton conducts Haydn and Handel, and is joined by soprano Sara Macliver for Bach and Mozart for a joyful evening. 

A charming programme featuring Renaud Capuçon and Gérard Caussé in the Sinfonia Concertante in E flat major, one of Mozart’s most sublime, sun-drenched works. 

Harry Bicket’s Mozart program traversed a sampling of the composer’s works in various forms, including the Prague Symphony and Exsultate, jubilate with Kiera Duffy.

In a program featuring music by Mozart and Mahler, the third work – Ruggles' Evocations – was Michael Tilson Thomas' most interesting contribution.

Donald Runnicles, Carolyn Sampson and the BBC SSO shine in a programme of early Mozart and Mahler's Fourth Symphony.

The legendary Kings College Choir, Cambridge, conducted by their very own Stephen Cleobury, was accompanied by the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment on period instruments at the Royal Albert Hall.

The Manchester Camerata under Alpesh Chouhan and soprano Olena Tokar welcomed the New Year with Johann Strauss favourites, five of Brahms's Hungarian Dances and a selection of arias.

A strangely mixed programme, in which soprano Elizabeth Watts and Kyra Humphreys directing Royal Northern Sinfonia displayed great musicanship and a tremendous range of emotion.

The buzz in the Concertgebouw was palpable for many minutes before the entrance of Cecilia Bartoli. It was one of those occasions when even an audience member who knew nothing of the artists could hardly have failed to anticipate something special. She did not disappoint.

Classical Opera’s well-attended concert at the Wigmore Hall was intriguingly titled “Mozart’s Castrati”.

The Australian Chamber Orchestra, known both for its innovative programming and for the tightness of the ensemble playing, displayed both qualities on Saturday night, the second stop in a five-city, nine-concert tour.

Between them, Mozart and Bach wrote what is to my mind some of the happiest music in the repertoire, and the works performed in this concert by Northern Sinfonia and Chorus reminded us that great music doesn’t have to be solemn, or deliver a serious message – sometimes it’s about having as much fun as possible.

Giving its concert on April 9th the subtitle “Sing Mozart Sing” and promoting it with a tongue-in-cheek portrait of the mischievous genius with his mouth half open in a wry smile, the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra probably intended the audience to expect an evening of cheerful and light entertainment. The programming suited this intention down to a tee.
