“More facility than substance”: perhaps an apt description of the music of Ottorino Respighi.  Certainly on the evidence of last night’s concert, featuring the three ever popular Roman tone poems, one could have been left with that impression, but we had a thoroughly good time in the process.

Charles Dutoit and the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra journey on a Roman holiday, taking in the pines, fountains and festivals of the Eternal City. 

In an engaging German-Scots accent, RSNO first violinist Ursula Heidecker Allen promised the pre-concert talk audience an evening of sunny Mediterranean moods. Time being a factor in these very worthwhile 25-minute, capacity-crowd events, she addressed only the programme’s two Respighi pieces, mentioning that he was a pupil of another programmed composer, Martucci.

Fate and Festivals was the rather bold title given to the latest Sydney Symphony Orchestra concert at Sydney Opera House in an evening which provided a great showcase for the full orchestra, demonstrating their great virtuosity, versatility and sensitivity as an ensemble.

Symphonic evocations of ancient Rome and 1950s Los Angeles filled the Royal Albert Hall last night, with John Adams conducting a combined orchestra of students from London's Royal Academy of Music and New York's Juilliard School. Between these pieces, by Respighi and Adams himself, the players were joined by pianist Imogen Cooper for Ravel's G major concerto.
