Five of the best-known dance companies based in New York City have united for a weeklong program every summer since COVID. This year they shared a stage but stuck to their own rep.

How lucky I am to live in a city where I can head over to Lincoln Center and catch an entire evening’s worth of Balanchine ballets, performed by the stellar artists that make up New York City Ballet. This gift is not lost on me; I may be becoming a jaded New Yorker, occasionally cynical and impressed by little, but I feel quite a thrill attending the ballet.

The American Ballet Theatre return to the stage of Sadler’s Wells this week with two mixed programmes of 20th and 21st century ballet. The first programme, of four one act pieces, explores the relationship between music and dance, beginning and ending with a UK premiere.Seven Sonatas choreographed by Alexei Ratmansky, ABT’s artist in residence and former Bolshoi director, opens the programme.
