A knight kills his beloved without recognizing her. In Claudio Monteverdi’s Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda, a fatal mistake on the battlefield takes on a chilling musical form in which love, guilt and violence merge into a fever dream.
Under the baton of Richard Egarr, the Orkest van de Achttiende Eeuw (Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century) places Monteverdi’s Il Combattimento at the heart of a programme filled with poignant music from the Italian Baroque. The evening also features the music of Carlo Gesualdo, the composer who infamously had his wife and her lover killed after catching them together. Soprano Anna Prohaska and tenor Ian Bostridge guide the audience through this labyrinth of true and false memories, while two dancers add a physical dimension that brings the narrative to life.
Tickets: € 12,50 – € 59,00
