A man wakes up and blinks. He remembers what happened—or was it a dream? In this haunting production, love, guilt, and violence merge into a feverish dream. The life of the infamous composer-murderer Gesualdo and Monteverdi’s composition *Il Combattimento di Tancredi e Clorinda*, about a knight who kills his beloved because he does not recognize her in armor, serve as the sources of inspiration for this program.
Soprano Anna Prohaska and tenor Ian Bostridge serve as guides through this labyrinth of real and false memories, where identity and boundaries blur and constantly shift. Two dancers accompany the singers on their quest for a fitting conclusion to their story. The tale of two lovers also touches on themes such as polarization, the multifaceted nature of identity, and the subconscious.
The Orchestra of the Eighteenth Century performs Monteverdi’s Combattimento as the musical centerpiece of this program, conducted by Richard Egarr. Surrounding this, they perform works from the Italian Baroque era by Monteverdi, Gesualdo, and other composers. The orchestra also becomes part of the drama. Directed by Sommer Ulrickson, the result is a poignant performance exploring eternal questions such as love and guilt.
