From the initial trumpet notes of his First Symphony, we hear full-blooded Dmitry Shostakovich: elusive, self-assured and full of irony. In his satirical opera L’amour des trois oranges, Prokofiev shows he can also be humorous. He wrote his Sinfonia Concertante for cello and orchestra for the young Mstislav Rostropovich. A few years later, this work inspired Shostakovich to write his First Cello Concerto.
