It remains a mystery: Franz Schubert’s two great piano trios were written as if in passing; in the case of the B flat major Trio, we don’t even know when. When the E flat major Trio was first printed in December 1828, Schubert had already been dead, and the B flat major Trio was only published in 1836. And yet the magic of both works still holds us under its spell today; they are timeless and seem to have just been composed. Rudolf Buchbinder has been fascinated by these trios his entire life. For this matinee he invited two congenial partners with whom he has enjoyed enduring artistic friendships: Nikolaj Szeps-Znaider and Gautier Capuçon.
