The Turangalîla-symphonie is an ecstatic outburst of love and rejoicing without equal in 20th-century music.
Messiaen embraces everything from the erotic mysticism of Scriabin and Gershwin's seductive nocturnal jazz to Christian plainchant, Indian ragas and birdsong. The result is a delirious masterpiece that at times comes close to musical meltdown.
