Tonight's concert features two stirring evocations of the natural world.

Mendelssohn's ever-popular overture is one of a number of art works inspired by Fingal's Cave, a landmark so inspiring that the likes of Wordsworth, Keats and JMW Turner have all been seduced by it.

Mahler's conjuration of nature awakening follows, replete with bird-calls and the sound of a marching town band punctuating a haunting, minor-key version of children's favourite, 'Frère Jacques'.
