Festival: Beethoven Week

It is the unique concept that makes the Beethoven-Woche (Beethoven Week), the chamber music festival of the Beethoven-Haus, so special: It is a “festival of one work”, meaning that all programmes are developed based on a selected key work which was composed by Beethoven 200 years ago, but they also open up to present-day music. At the same time, the festival honours the chosen original composition, thereby expressing the distinct power of Beethoven's music, also represented in the different vivid artistic receptions.

Regarding chamber music performances, the Beethoven-Haus has been a worldwide leading institution for centuries. Starting in 1890, the first music festival in the world exclusively dedicated to chamber music took place in Bonn, Beethoven’s birthplace - back then under the direction of the well-known violinist Joseph Joachim. Since 2014 the Beethoven-Haus has shifted its focus back on its long tradition and started the new festival “Beethoven Woche”. Today, Tabea Zimmermann, the internationally acclaimed viola player, serves as artistic director. She regularly invites chamber music stars such as Jean-Guihen Queyras, Olli Mustonen, the Meta4 quartet or Christoph Prégardien but also young shooting musicians to the festival where she herself performs in varying musical ensembles.

Concerts are mainly held at the chamber music hall of the Beethoven-Haus with its superb acoustics and without a doubt one of the most splendid music halls in Europe. Apart from that, Beethoven's native city, beautifully seated at the river Rhine and close to the Siebengebirge hill range, surprises its guests with many other exciting cultural offers such as exhibitions, orchestra concerts and opera performances as well as activities like a pleasant stroll through the inner city. For those who prefer big city life, Cologne and its famous cathedral are only 30 minutes away by train or car. Bonn can easily be reached by train as the station is located in the city centre. Several airlines offer connections to the Cologne-Bonn airport where visitors can then hop on a frequently running shuttle bus that takes them to Bonn within just half an hour.
