Ferdinand Hérold’s Zampa was an immediate success. First performed in 1831, it established itself during the 1830s and 40s as a pillar of the European operatic repertoire. A tale of brigands incorporating fantastical elements, the work was perfectly in phase with its time, even drawing inspiration from Mozart’s Don Giovanni. Contemporaneous with Meyerbeer’s Robert le Diable, it was the Opéra-Comique’s response to the revival of grand opera.
