Magical Flute: McVicar's Zauberflöte returns to Covent Garden

Elsa Dreisig (Pamina) and Tuuli Takala (Queen of the Night) © ROH | Tristram Kenton

David McVicar’s imaginative staging of Mozart’s The Magic Flute comes back for its eighth run at the Royal Opera with an excellent new cast.

The coronation and tragedy of Boris revived at Covent Garden

Bryn Terfel (Boris) and Roger Honeywell (Shuisky) © ROH | Clive Barda
A title role performance full of depth from Terfel and a barnstorming comic interlude from Tomlinson provide some great moments, but much of this Boris fails to rise above the ordinary.

A game of two halves: Ariadne auf Naxos at Longborough

Clare Presland (Composer) © Matthew Williams-Ellis
Ariadne auf Naxos shines in an ultra-contemporary world of high net worth tantrums at Longborough Festival Opera, complete with glam rock fairies, giant string, and glorious music.

Entertaining but not entrancing: Turnage's Coraline

Mary Bevan (Coraline), Kitty Whatey (Other Mother) and Ghost Children © ROH | Stephen Cummiskey
Mark-Anthony Turnage's take on Neil Gaiman's classic young adult novella is well sung and well staged, without quite reaching peak intensity.

Devilishly good fun: The Rake's Progress

Jonathan Lemalu (Nick Shadow) and Robert Murray (Tom Rakewell) © Catherine Ashmore
A compelling and energetic debut production from a new opera company in the raddled surroundings of Wilton's Music Hall.
