Ballet Memphis: Celebrating Diversity with Works Centered on its Heritage

The intoxicating aroma of artisan bread baking in the stone hearth ovens of the bakery next to Z Space in San Francisco's Mission district, turned out to be the only wholesome feature of an evening spent in the company of Amy Seiwert and four other choreographers whom she chose to collaborate on a fairy-tale-themed program that closed the month-long West Wave Dance Festival.

A collection of tributes to former world class tap dancers alongside some new works that clearly thrilled the capacity audience at the Joyce Theater.

Six works, including two world premieres, made up the latest program from Parsons Dance. Thoroughly joyful, the audience were sent home buzzing.

Acclaimed violinist and 2024 MacArthur Fellow Johnny Gandelsman invited four choreographers to join him on a marathon through Bach's six cello suites. His musicianship was the highlight of the evening. 

In their penultimate stop on a US tour, Ailey's second company produced exceptional performances in an Ailey classic and four handsome new works.
