Work: Symphony no. 9 in E minor

Vaughan Williams' Ninth Symphony is not yet an audience favourite, but Andrew Manze and the London Philharmonic Orchestra make an admirable case for the work as a masterpiece. 

The Bridgewater Hall's cycle of Vaughan Williams' symphonies continues with a gripping performance of the Ninth, coupled with a colourful account of Holst's The Planets. 

A striking performance of The Planets had people humming their favourite bits on their way out of the hall, but the real winner was Vaughan Williams’ neglected valedictory symphony.

Kancheli, Martinů and Vaughan Williams – all of whom have at various times been misunderstood or ignored – featured in this bold programme from Vladamir Jurowski and the LPO.
