The Concert
Stravinsky and Gubaidulina breathe vivid, visceral life into Russian fairy tales, plus Shostakovich’s most beautiful and riveting concerto.
The Music
In her 1971 Märchen – Poem, Sofia Gubaidulina uses music of transcendent beauty to conjure a stick of chalk that dreams of life outside the classroom drawing beautiful landscapes.
Stravinsky’s 1910 ballet The Firebird paints an equally fantastical world of mythical lands and creatures through a score of Romantic richness that hints at 20th-century modernism.
With his Violin Concerto No 1, Shostakovich created one of his finest, most appealing works: a tour de force for the soloist, full of undeniable excitement for the audience.
The Performers
Ryan Bancroft and the LSO journey to magical worlds, and are joined by the brilliant, expressive violinist Clara-Jumi Kang for Shostakovich.
