When composer Alban Berg saw Georg Büchner’s fragmentary theatre text performed in 1914, it inspired him to create an absolute masterpiece. Raw and unfiltered, Wozzeck shows us the dehumanization of a vulnerable individual who craves recognition and connection but is systematically rejected and abused.
In this new production, music director Alain Altinoglu and stage director Christophe Coppens delve deeper into the turbulent emotions of the soldier Wozzeck. As a maelstrom of violence and isolation gradually blurs the boundaries between past and present, reality and imagination, his splintered psyche slides towards a single inevitable thought: murder. When it premiered in 1925, Berg’s opera caused a real sensation. A century later, this haunting work proves that it has lost none of its relevance.
