Transition

Bach’s motets have always been much loved. Much of Bach’s work went unperformed for a long time after his death. The motets are an exception to this and provided meaning during life’s transitional moments, such as funerals. Grete Pedersen complements the motets with Nuits, adieux (Saariaho, 1991), in which farewell and the transition from night to day are given a singing, breathing and whispering sound. In Entr’acte (2011) by Caroline Shaw, transition has become an end in itself. Here, the extraordinary musical transitions tumble playfully over one another.
