‘Builds an atmosphere of sinewy, evocative mystery, resembling music of the baroque as if remembered in a dream…’ (Sydney Morning Herald on Dark with Excessive Bright)
One of the most distinctive and exciting voices of new music today, composer Missy Mazzoli writes adventurous music with nods to classical, indie rock and pop. In her double bass concerto, jointly commissioned by Aurora Orchestra and the Australian Chamber Orchestra, she creates a soaring soundscape based on Baroque idioms that swirl with relentless momentum and brooding intensity. While Mazzoli’s music is very much the sound of the moment, she cites Beethoven as her ultimate musical love, while being referred to as ‘Brooklyn’s post-millennial Mozart’ (Time Out). Referencing these inspirations, Aurora pairs her music with Beethoven’s compact and daring Eighth Symphony, and Mozart’s beloved Piano Concerto No. 21 performed by rising star pianist Yeol Eum Son, praised for her poised and playful interpretation of the concerto.
