The most famous “Piano Concerto No. 1” wasn’t written by Brahms, Chopin or Beethoven. Their first concertos stand no chance in comparison to the powerful piano chords of Tchaikovsky’s opus 23. Add the famous melody of the string section and every concert audience in the world will melt away, especially with Bernd Glemser sitting at the grand piano. Michael Hofstetter builds a bridge between Tchaikovsky and Schumann and adds Lord Byron’s romantically torn hero Manfred to the mix to whom Schumann dedicated his most beautiful overture.
