Passion and brilliance
Esa-Pekka Salonen, Artistic Director of the Baltic Sea Festival, will be on the podium together with one of the hottest, most sought-after pianists in the world just now, the 28 year-old Chinese Yuja Wang. The New York Times recently wrote of her: “She seems to have everything: speed, flexibility, pianistic thunder and interpretive nuance.” Salonen and Wang have worked together before, most recently with the New York Philharmonic. Now, when they meet again in the Berwaldhallen Concert Hall they will perform Bartók’s Piano Concerto No. 1 and rarely performed Turangalîla-symphony together with our own Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. Messiaen's monumental Turangalîla- symphony is a 1900-century repertoire masterpiece. It was composed in the aftermath of the Second World War and marks the culmination of Messiaen's musical language between periods. Here he explores all the possibilities of composing for a large orchestra and takes the listener on an almost superhuman roller-coaster of expression - from the relentless, wonderful and cosmic to the intimate and deeply personal. The result is an incredibly bold and forward-looking piece that celebrates both the human and divine existence.
