Verführung und Popkultur: Wiederaufnahme von Don Giovanni in Salzburg

Von Larissa Schütz, 10. Januar 2016

Wenn Don Giovanni im Amerika des 21. Jahrhunderts leben würde. Dann wäre er der König der Vorstadt und der Partys, zumindest wenn es nach Jacopo Spirei geht.

Juego de identidades en Un ballo in maschera. Tragedia multicolor por Graham Vick, Jacopo Spirei y Riccardo Frizza en el Liceu

Von Maria Sánchez, 9. Februar 2024

La última producción del tándem Vick-Spirei defiende una postura fluida entre géneros y convenciones; una puesta de escena bien calibrada por el temple verdiano de Riccardo Frizza.

The “other” Lucia at the Donizetti Opera Festival in Bergamo

Von Laura Servidei, 18. November 2023

Stricken by illness, the French version of Donizetti’s masterpiece is somewhat disappointing.

La donna del lago in Buxton: glorious music, fine singing, confusing production

Von Peter Connors, 15. Juli 2022

Buxton International Festival presents Rossini's exhilarating La donna del lago with fine singing, but it is undermined by Jacopo Spirei's staging.

Rossini's Ermione returns to its birthplace in Naples

Von Lorenzo Fiorito, 7. November 2019

A bland staging: at the end what really emerged was Rossini’s glorious music, its intelligent construction and perfect beauty.

Wuorinen’s Brokeback Mountain returns home to NYCO

Von Edward Sava-Segal, 2. Juni 2018

In the Brokeback Mountain, Wuorinen's powerfully depicts the stern landscapes, the omnipresent menace, the desolate life of the characters and their awkward interactions.

More Porpora operas, please (just not this one!): Mitridate at Schloss Schwetzingen

Von Ilana Walder-Biesanz, 28. Dezember 2017

Propora's Mitridate at Schloss Schwetzingen lacks dramatic sense (blame librettist Cibber and director Spirei). But exciting music strongly delivered makes a case for more Porpora in the repertoire.

A melancholy Falstaff at the Verdi Festival in Parma

Von Renato Verga, 1. Oktober 2017

Not a particularly revealing Falstaff, but a pleasing performance though. Maybe one would have expected something of greater impact from a festival like this one, but that goal had already accomplished by Graham Vick with his Stiffelio the night before...

Mozart's genius shines clearly in San Francisco Opera's darkly comic production of Don Giovanni

Von Donna Stoering, 4. Juni 2017

Dangling and turning like shards of a giant overhead chandelier in Don Giovanni’s banquet hall, this is an evocative multimedia production that tantalizes the senses while shining new light on Mozart's genius.

Mill's will get you anything – and in La cambiale di matrimonio at the Vienna Kammeroper, you can't ask for more

Von Snapdragon, 21. Oktober 2012

A father having marriage plans for his daughter of which the latter does not approve may not be the most original plot, but it has inspired operas throughout the centuries, with well-known examples being The Bartered Bride and Arabella.
