Intrepid chamber musicians braved wild weather to deliver a stirring performance of Schubert's String Quintet in C major, alongside early works from Prokofiev and Debussy.

The Paris-based Quatuor Modigliani are joined by special guests for an evening of Schubert quintets in Évian-les-Bains. 

A dramatic setting in Davos was the backdrop to both a premiere of an compelling work recently commissioned by the Davos Festival and a Schubert masterpiece.

In one of Europe’s hottest capitals (that day), a sizeable Edinburgh crowd gathered in the shade of the Dovecot Studios for this season’s final RSNO chamber concert.

The Tokyo String Quartet played a kind of “meta-goodbye” concert this Saturday evening at 92Y. The performance, their last at this venue before the quartet is disbanded, featured three great composers’ own farewells, the final works written for string chamber ensembles by Schubert, Haydn, and Bartók.

A full house at St George’s was spoilt with some seriously fantastic music in this concert. String quartets don’t come much better than the Takács Quartet. Versatile, passionate, and technically very accurate, there was a real quality of care that went into their performance.

It's not always that Schoenberg is out-weirded in a concert programme. More often, his is the eyebrow-raiser, the tougher music on display, which takes more effort to enjoy.

Schubert’s deeply contemplative String Quintet was a bold but worthy choice for the first Late Night Prom of the season. It is rare for a string quartet (in this case augmented by an extra cellist) to grace the main stage of the Proms, although chamber music is well represented in the Proms Chamber Music series.

Top-class orchestras have top-class musicians, and top-class musicians have legions of fans. If not legions, certainly a platoon or two: the Wigmore Hall was packed last night as the Soloists of the London Philharmonic Orchestra took to the stage to perform Mozart’s Horn Quintet in E flat, Strauss’s Sextet for strings from ‘Capriccio’ and Schubert’s divine String Quintet in C.
