Martyn Brabbins and Claire Booth are among the Nash Ensemble's regular collaborators celebrating the group’s 60th Anniversary, marked by four world premieres.

Fine performances from Claire Booth and Nash Ensemble conjure up the dramatic landscapes of Andalusia, the Hebrides and the wilds of southern Wisconsin, as portrayed by Harrison Birtwistle and Simon Holt. 

The Nash Ensemble performs Dvořák's Piano Quartet no. 2 at Wigmore Hall, followed by a joyful rendition of Schubert's Trout Quintet.

An affectionate Trout played by long-standing colleagues and friends from Royal Northern Sinfonia, along with Imogen Holst's Phantasy Quartet and Thomas Adès's fascinating Piano Quintet.

An introductory reading by local writer Philip Pullman was an appropriate introduction to the “Dusk to Dawn” concert, one of the last in this year’s Oxford Chamber Music Festival (themed “Fairytales and Fantasy”). The collision of a light-hearted surface with darker undertones was not just in Pullman’s retelling of the Grimm stories, but pervaded Artistic Director Priya Mitchell’s programming.

Bell’s Whisky used to be almost synonymous with Perth, and anyone who lives in Perth and Kinross will have been touched by the generosity of A.K. Bell’s Gannochy Trust, started 75 years ago. Early projects included sewerage systems to improve the quality of the river Tay, and setting up the Gannochy Housing Estate.

In a way, this was a virtuoso programme, but Alasdair Beatson is not a pianist inclined to indulge in vapid displays of skill and empty gesturing. Rather, this was a set of slightly unobvious works where the music was very much the point, not the performer.We opened with Mozart's Piano sonata in F K332.

The Scottish Ensemble launched their 2011/12 season with a programme of Mendelssohn and Stravinsky. On the face of it the pairing looked rather unlikely, but as Artistic Director Jonathan Morton explained to us, both composers were full of energy and invention, and each searching out new musical direction in their own times.
