With combined ages of over 150 years between conductor and soloist, there was no lack of experience on the platform for this Royal Philharmonic Orchestra concert.

Violist Antoine Tamestit didn’t seem like much a soloist at the opening of Berlioz’s Harold in Italy on Tuesday night, in Valery Gergiev and the London Symphony Orchestra’s second performance of this programme at the Barbican. His viola lolling casually at his side, Tamestit gazed pleasantly at the orchestra, nodding along with them from time to time.

The first thing that caught my eye Wednesday night was the sheer size of the Boston Symphony Orchestra; they took up every inch of free space atop the Perelman Stage at Carnegie Hall. So when the first note from Hector Berlioz’s Overture to Benvenuto Cellini rang out, the sound enveloped the hall, inserting itself into every nook and cranny.

Une bien belle soirée qui offrit au public « The Infant Minstrel and His Peculiar Menagerie » plein de malice et de jeunes talents vocaux, un Vadim Gluzman Royal et un Orchestre de la Suisse Romande rutilant sous la baguette inspirante d’Edward Gardner.

Le 26 avril, le Philharmonia Orchestra proposait sous la baguette de Youri Temirkanov un beau programme Rimsky-Korsakov/Rachmaninov/Dvořák, avec Daniil Trifonov au piano. Si le jeune soliste a déployé tout son génie, l’orchestre pourtant d’un très bon niveau n’a pas été aussi convaincant.
