Alexei Ratmansky’s poignant and gripping new work breaks ground at New York City Ballet in a powerful triple bill.

Dutch National Ballet continues its series honouring the great choreographer. 

Ballets live and die by their scores – as Balanchine knew when he kept returning to Stravinsky. His Symphony in Three Movements will live forever, as will Justin Peck's The Times are Racing, to Dan Deacon's America.

The closing tableau of Symphony in Three Movements is a monument to geometric abstraction that lingers in the mind long after you leave the theater, much like the paintings of Piet Mondrian.

Miami City Ballet's performance plays with the many shades of Balanchine's palette and even offers a number of stunning moments.

Boston Ballet's second program at Lincoln Center's David H Koch Theater showed off the company's terrific speed, musicality and versatility. 

The Italian vocal ensemble Cappella Artemisia, directed by mezzo-soprano Candace Smith, is a chamber group devoted to recovering the rich musical repertoire of the 16th- and 17th-century Italian convents.

How lucky I am to live in a city where I can head over to Lincoln Center and catch an entire evening’s worth of Balanchine ballets, performed by the stellar artists that make up New York City Ballet. This gift is not lost on me; I may be becoming a jaded New Yorker, occasionally cynical and impressed by little, but I feel quite a thrill attending the ballet.

Thirty years after its last visit to London, Boston Ballet has returned to the British capital in a celebratory mood. With the company opening its 50th season, the London tour has been planned both to launch the anniversary and to strengthen the growing international reputation of the company.

If you "don't get” ballet, you may be thinking too hard. In the words of one friend who went to see Boston Ballet's Balanchine/Robbins program with me on opening night, “you look past it and it appears.” While many ballets tell a story or convey a theme, George Balanchine and Jerome Robbins encourage us to appreciate beauty for the sake of beauty. We don't try to understand a moonrise, after all.
