Balanchine's much-loved yet maddeningly disjointed A Midsummer Night's Dream returns to New York City Ballet. Some glorious performances on opening night, some uneven. But the night belonged to the bugs.

New York City Ballet dancing Balanchine's A Midsummer Night's Dream is the happiest way to end a long season.

The music shimmers and the dancers shine in this twisted tale, a comic ballet but with dark undertones.

George Balanchine's ballet brings joy to audiences year in, year out. 

Yet the audience loved it, just as they love every performance of A Midsummer's Night DreamI've ever attended. This ballet is a tribute to Shakespeare, a tribute to love, a tribute to dance. One walks out feeling as if one's "soul is in the sky."

A very fine performance, notable for the musicality which imbued each dancer’s presence and the excellent acting which kept the audience glued to the story.

When you add it all up, this was a perfect closing show. It wasn’t without flaws but they were minor and the good far outweighed the bad.

As the season closer, you want something like this that lets everyone have some fun.

Nacho Duato’s baffling and beautiful Por Vos Muero, little known in the United States, kicked off Oregon Ballet Theatre’s first season under its new artistic director, Kevin Irving. The piece, originally set on Duato’s Compañia Nacional de Danza in 1996, makes a deep visual and emotional impression, a shining rebuttal to all the tedious, empty acrobatics of much contemporary dance.

The lady at the bus stop announced that she had just been to the ballet, and commented: “I didn’t really understand it but I loved it”. The ballet was A Midsummer Night’s Dream, performed by Northern Ballet, and yes, it was somewhat confusing, though highly enjoyable and very funny.
