A double-header celebrates Schubert featuring Allan Clayton and Paul Lewis in Winterreise and the Austrian folk/rock band The Erllkings.

The final day of Oxford Lieder's 80-event festival was framed by two recitals taking us from the world of German folklore andDes Knaben Wunderhorn, to the pain and drama of romantic entanglements. 

Twentysomething Philippe Sly wields an impressive voice. Like the mythical John Henry’s hammer, it rings like silver in the upper register, the middle shines like gold, and his bass is firm as iron. From the second line of Henri Duparc’s “Chanson Triste” Sly interested with his way of rolling out phrases, englobing lines in cavernous spaces.

Au milieu des bougies de l’ECUJE, la chanteuse et la pianiste ont proposé une traversée intelligente et sensible dans l'histoire et l'esthétique du lied, de Schubert à Hugo Wolf.

Le grand duo Bostridge - Drake nous offrent un programme Schubert très personnel dont la légère superficialité ne nous empêche pas de profiter d'un extraordinaire moment de poésie.
