Impressive, athletic – and so realistic that individual moments of our play will be clearly recognisable: we look forward to performing a few humorous pastimes with our instruments under the baton of Robert Treviño. The task at hand is to perform a musical team game written by Charles Ives, and our audience may look forward to seeing how this »football game« turns out, with its interwoven fan chants and a referee’s whistle to ensure fairness. The composer himself characterised the piece as a »caricature in two halves of two minutes each« and added: »Funny to listen to – but difficult to play!« We also present the equally funny pranks of Till Eulenspiegel, the witty prankster whom Richard Strauss captured with great verve – and with such joy, because he wanted to hear »people in the concert hall laugh properly« for once. Our new principal oboist Janos Wollenweber takes on the lead role in Strauss’ virtuoso concerto, which comes across as a musical harlequinade and is a stroke of genius – although he ironically described it as »wrist exercise«, »because you can’t play skat all day long«. After the interval, we will then take a look at a fascinating picture puzzle. It is introduced in a humorous and downright theatrical manner by John Corigliano’s »Promenade«, which gradually draws us into Mussorgsky’s orchestral museum.
