The pre-concert talk is a firm favourite with many RSNO regulars. Situated in what feels like an impromptu chapel near the Upper Circle Bar, this 25-minute exploration attracts a congregation which spills well beyond the hundred or so seats laid out.

This was without a doubt the best performance of Mahler's First Symphony. Norrington's humor comes through and complements his superb musicianship.The First often gets bogged down, but this performance was bright and alwaysexciting giving the instrumentalists enough room to show their skills... andwhat skills.I have no doubt that the NHK Symphony is the greatest orchestraat this time.

The Hallé orchestra’s concerts around Britain take them to a number of towns which do not normally get to hear top-quality orchestral concerts, with forthcoming performances in Kendal, Carlisle and Derby and others. Friday night's performance by the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment in the Royal Festival Hall under Vladimir Jurowski got off to a slow and somewhat insecure start. Sixth in the series of concerts by the orchestra in the 2010-2011 season, sub-titled Symphonic Enlightenment, the concert opened with the Prelude to Parsifal by Wagner.

Created out of the period instrument movement, the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment (OAE) is dedicated to performing works on original instruments (or copies of them) so that audiences can hear music the way it was originally intended to be heard.
