Alagna and Pankratova head the cast in one of the Royal Opera House's most widely acclaimed productions.

Stage director Damiano Michieletto brings us this operatic double bill par excellence comprising the two most emblematic titles of the Verismo movement. Amounting virtually to twin artistic manifestos, they become, in Michieletto's version, the two sides of the same coin, with characters from Cavalleria rusticana appearing in Pagliacci and vice-versa. The topics of the two operas, both set in 1950s Italy, also intertwine in the visual resources used. A veritable "slice of life", to quote from the sung prologue to Pagliacci.

Roberto Alagna (who plays both Turiddu and Canio) revisits the Liceu with Fabio Sartori and Aleksandra Kurzak to remind us, in Canio's words, that “the theatre and life are not the same thing”.

This production has won lavish praise and carried off the 2016 Laurence Olivier Award for the Best Opera Production in the UK.
