An unusual combination of 20th-century Russian masterworks herald debut appearances by both conductor and soloist in Sydney.

There may be little profound to say in Dvořák’s Sixth Symphony, but that didn’t stop Nézet-Séguin and the LPO telling it most beguilingly. 

While people gathered near big screens at the Museum Square to see the Dutch football team play, metres along the road another crowd gathered to hear the Gelders Orchestra play Dvořák's Cello Concerto and Ninth Symphony.

The programme for the closing concert of Sommets Musicaux de Gstaad had a familiar form: a late twentieth century concerto sandwiched between two classical pieces – a sure sign, if ever there was one, of a “difficult” work sugar-coated by material more palatable to a mainstream audience. But signs can be misleading, extremely so in this case.
