Guide to the Orchestre Métropolitain de Montréal

''Nézet-Séguin achieved a sense of poignancy through his judicious management of the tension and release in each and every phrase. One phrase seamlessly dove-tailed to the next. The emotional impact of Nézet-Séguin’s interpretation was proven by the reverent silence in the hall that was sustained at the Symphony’s conclusion...'

Serving a greater purpose: in conversation with Yannick Nézet-Séguin

We spoke to the Chief Conductor of Orchestre Métropolitain de Montréal about their upcoming US tour, giving back, Bruckner and more.

One of Quebec’s leading cultural ambassadors, the Orchestre Métropolitain de Montréal was founded in 1981 on a bold gamble: that the best way to promote symphonic music is by creating strong ties with the public.

Since his appointment as artistic director and principal conductor in 2000, Yannick Nézet-Séguin has developed and maintained an exceptional relationship with the musicians, undoubtedly contributing to the Orchestre’s success, longevity and growing fame.

For 20 years now, the OM has grown alongside its artistic director and principal conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin, whose career continues to reach new heights. Their exceptional collaborative relationship has given rise to many ambitious musical projects, some of them quite daring, under the leadership of the Montreal conductor.

Building on this special relationship and on the momentum of its concerts and recordings, the OM has enjoyed growing success and earned an enviable international reputation.

The year 2019 will go down as a turning point in the history of the OM, which recently announced that Yannick Nézet-Séguin’s contract has been renewed for life. This rare commitment only strengthens the extraordinary human relationship and deep bond that the conductor maintains with his Montreal orchestra and audiences.

Still glowing from the success of its 2017 European tour, the OM will embark on a United States tour in November 2019, visiting Chicago, Ann Arbor, New York City and Philadelphia with its conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin and mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato.

Although both Bernstein's Jeremiah Symphony and Mendelssohn's Hymn of Praise explore the role religion plays in the cultivation of the human spirit, they are in many aspects sharply contrasting works. This made for an appealing concert by Montreal's Orchestre Métropolitain and their conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin.
