The Orchestra dell’Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia returns after a sell-out appearance in 2014.
The orchestra premiered Respighi’s colourful Roman works a century ago. Now, with music director Antonio Pappano at the helm, it presents the composer’s rich odes to its home city.
In 1913, Respighi was appointed teacher of composition at the orchestra’s home venue, the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, where he remained for the rest of his life.
This majestic evocation of the heart of Italy is paired with a dramatic overture by Respighi’s forebear, Rossini.
In the first half of the concert, Yuja Wang, named ‘one of the best young pianists around’ by The New York Times, scales the emotional heights of Tchaikovsky’s passionate first piano concerto.
