Vor allem bei Händel hatten sich neue und alte Partner und Freunde gefunden, die in ihren Tanzschritten die momentane Schwere vergessen machten.

Beth Taylor gives the lows and highs of Handel's heroics an almighty, whole-body shakedown in Sinéad O'Neill’s new staging of Handel's Orlando.

The Academy of Ancient Music poses the question what might have been in Leipzig with stunning performances of Bach and his competitors to be the new Thomaskantor.

Opha Phelan’s staging presents the action as a grand, Freudian social experiment. It’s a risk – but the production is lifted by outstanding performances from the cast and the Academy of Ancient Music.

Tenor Ed Lyon fulfils a long-held ambition to sing Monteverdi's Eighth Book of Madrigals, conducted by his former teacher, Laurence Cummings at Milton Court.

Countertenor Reginald Mobley and the Academy of Ancient Music shine in an alternative history of English Baroque, with a new work by Roderick Williams.

Music from the court of Louis XIV – Lully, Jacquet de la Guerre, Rebel and others – is superbly played. But the attempt to put it in the context of the dances of the day is perhaps over-ambitious.

A claim was made not to authenticity, but merely to “a chance to hear the work anew”.

All six concertos in one evening at Milton Court, presented with verve and talent by the Academy of Ancient Music and Laurence Cummings.

Majestic performances all round in Handel's oratorio, with a strong solo team led by Allan Clayton as Samson, and a convincingly well-drilled performance from the Philharmonia Chorus.

There was a celebratory atmosphere to launch the 2022 festival, including royal fireworks and coronation anthems, but it was Ukrainian mezzo Anna Starushkevych who provided the evening's most moving moment.

A delightful performance of Haydn's oratorio, streamed from the Barbican all the way to our reviewer in Australia.

The Academy of Ancient Music puts composer Dario Castello in the spotlight and in context in this live stream from the West Road Concert Hall in Cambridge.

Richard Egarr was able to put together a performance that – full of energy and dynamism – succeeded in bringing forward with great transparency, restraint and delicacy this score’s wonderful musical tapestry.

The Academy of Ancient Music played with such stylistic elegance, charm and sheer physical beauty that it was like hearing I Musici and Virtuosi di Roma for the first time in this repertoire in the 1950s.

Lloyd-Evans' new production of Mozart's classic might be traditional, but there's no lack of astuteness in his direction of his characters. Problems in the pit hinder an otherwise strong musical performance.

The BBC Singers sounded as ecstatically joyful in the first three parts of Bach's seasonal offering in Chelsea.

New conductor Sofi Jeannin delights with her fresh thinking on choral concerts.

A semi-staged Dido from the Academy of Ancient Music and the speculative funeral music for a queen.

Sublime orchestral playing and stellar soloists don't quite make up for a lacklustre performance by the Academy's choir in Monteverdi's moving work

Il ritorno d’Ulisse in patria tells one of the world’s great stories. This production is a treat for early opera fans and a great introduction for those new to the genre.

Music written by Bach for the Collegium Musicum, and also for the first Sunday after Easter, was played with skill and flourish by this exceptional orchestra;  sadly, the singing was not consistently good enough to match.

A satisfying concoction of Italian concertos from the Academy of Ancient Music had Frank de Bruine leading the charge on oboe, with pristine performances also from violin and harpsichord.

Eschewing conventions throughout, Daisy Evans' production of The Fairy Queen walks boldly out of the woods into an exciting future for opera staging.

The element of surprise in this seemingly standard Late Night Prom of Handel, Muffat, Bach and Purcell by the period-instrument orchestra Academy of Ancient Music was Leopold Stokowski.

The Academy of Ancient Music gave a finely honed account of Handel's unusual "little opera", written for the Earl of Carnavon's household musicians: a sweet pastoral offering never yet out of the repertoire.

Stimulating sounds from the Academy of Ancient Music in late night Bach at the Proms.

Master improviser, Robert Levin, proved an informative and fun guide to a selection of Mozart's later masterpieces, performed with panache by the Academy of Ancient Music.

Gluck’s ballet Don Juan is a rarity but sadly, the tame performance by the Academy of Ancient Music, part of its ‘Grand Tour’ series, failed to seduce at Milton Court.

Today it is thought that J.S. Bach’s chamber and ensemble music, including the four Orchestral Suites, date from his time in Leipzig from the 1720s onwards. When all the Orchestral Suites (BWV1066–1069) are put together, their inventive and varied nature is evident. The suites make great use of all ensemble instruments and incorporate a range of structures, as well as internal forms and dances.

With such a star-studded line-up at a concert that had been sold out for weeks, this was always going to be an evening to remember. How’s this for an original way of displaying one’s celebratory Union Flag? Strapped to the top of one’s contrabassoon! Apart from the absence of the National Anthem and horseracing, this concert gave us the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee weekend in a nutshell, encompassing the solemnity and sovereignty of all four of Handel’s Coronation Anthems, the exuberance of the Music for the Royal Firework

There are some musical compositions that have always been a bit of a gamble, for composers, performers and even listeners. They might be exceptionally difficult, require extraordinary forces, or show such originality as to be perpetually startling.
