The concert opened with Sibelius’s 1914 The Bard, one of the less frequently heard of the Fin’s tone poems.

Prom 31 seems to have been loosely based around a royal theme, with two of several nods at this year’s Proms to the Coronation anniversary: explicitly, in the case of William Walton’s Orb and Sceptre march, which he wrote for the 1953 ceremony, and obliquely by way of Edmund Rubbra’s Ode to the Queen, which the BBC commissioned for the Coronation celebrations.

Sibelius is an extraordinarily well represented composer in Manchester and, ever since Sir John Barbirolli’s conductorship of the Hallé, all his symphonies have been presented here many times by both native and visiting orchestras – even within the last decade a Sibelius symphony cycle has been undertaken by the Hallé, and tonight marks the third and final concert of the BBC Philharmonic’s 2013 Si

The second instalment in the BBC Philharmonic’s Sibelius cycle saw the mighty Second Symphony paired with the darker Fourth at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall. Both received superb performances.The Fourth is perhaps the hardest to enjoy of Sibelius’ seven symphonies. It lacks the obvious heroism of the First, Second, Fifth and Seventh and ends bleakly.

John Storgårds began his week-long survey of all seven Sibelius symphonies with mixed success, presenting an excellent account of no. 1 alongside an inconsistent no. 5 at Manchester’s Bridgewater Hall.Throughout the evening, Storgårds showed a keenness for capricious tempo fluctuations and remarkably heavy brass and timpani. This worked better in the first than the fifth.
