Over the past several years the Cleveland Orchestra has instituted a number of new concert opportunities to attract a new, younger audience, in response to the “greying” of its traditional audience base and the diminished interest in a season-long commitment to regular concerts.

What a stark contrast between the visual and the aural at last Thursday’s concert at the Hollywood Bowl. On stage was the 79-year-old conductor Rafael Frühbeck de Burgos, appearing frail as he shuffled towards the podium; the gauntness of his features accentuated by his suit which hung loosely from his frame.

Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream and the incidental music by Mendelssohn it inspires both employ a wide range of expressive techniques in their respective medium. Bringing the drama and the music together in one performance, the Queensland Symphony Orchestra and 4MBS Arts Productions delivered an evening of finely tuned light entertainment.
